Academic work

My Ph.D. focussed on British Standard BS 8887-1 and its use in design for manufacture, assembly, disassembly and end-of-life processing (MADE).

Quantitative techniques were used to analyse sales and distribution data, whereas a qualitative approach was taken in investigating the standards use. Various users of the standard, mainly designers, production engineers and environmental managers at a wide range of companies were interviewed, to discover the practical issues associated with implementation of the standard.  Findings were reported to the relevant BSI committee, and suggested a link between the use of BS 8887-1 and European environmental legislation e.g. WEEE, RoHS and ELV, as well as market trends and the increasing prevalence of Environmental Management Systems e.g. ISO 14001.
